Meet Fran Milo - 2014 Red Kettle Campaign Chairperson
Thank you, Fran Milo, for being the chairperson for the 2014 Red Kettle Campaign of the Salvation Army in La Porte. We appreciate your help in reaching out to the community through its service organizations, churches, businesses and others who help us “To do the most good”.
Pictured are Fran and her husband Tom who are well known for the Tom Milo Big Band where Fran is the featured vocalist and band manager. The band has performed all over the Midwest region and also on six cruise ships. She was the musical director for the Miss Indiana Pageant for 8 years.
Fran was born and raised in La Porte, Indiana and graduated from LPHS in 1969. She graduated from Indiana University Bloomington (Magna Cum Laude) with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music, and taught in the South Dearborn School Corp. in Aurora, IN and at South Central School Corp. She completed her Master’s in Business Administration from Indiana University in 1977.
1977 is also when she became secretary of Milo Enterprises Inc. She and her husband are self-employed business owners with rental properties and “Suds on State” Laundromat. She was awarded the Athena Award for Outstanding Business woman of the Year in La Porte in 1995.
Fran served on the La Porte Community Schools Board of Trustees for 20 years during which time as president she led the board through the process that completed the last high school renovation. She was the Indiana School Board Association Board Member of the Year in 2001. She was a presenter at several State and National School Board Conventions, and was recognized as an Outstanding School Board member by the National School Board Association in 1998.
She serves on several Boards in the community including the YMCA Board of Trustees and the IU Medical Center – La Porte Hospital Board. She is currently Maintenance Chairman for the BID (Business Improvement District) which oversees the maintenance of the downtown improvements.
She is an active member of the choir and hand bell choir at Bethany Lutheran Church. She and her husband enjoy bicycling and travelling. She holds an instrument rating as a licensed pilot, but is no longer actively flying small aircraft. She and her husband, Tom, have been married for 39 years and have two grown children. Jason is a sales contractor for Menard’s. Her daughter Blair is currently the mayor of La Porte.
