Meet the 2014 Red Kettle Campaign Coordinator
My name is Ketra Bolster and I am the Red Kettle Campaign Coordinator for the La Porte Salvation Army for 2014.
Throughout my adult life, I have worn many hats. Among them has been wife, mother, PTA Volunteer and officer, student and child advocate, school board member just to name a few. Now I am pleased to announce that I am donning a new hat for the upcoming Holiday Season as the Salvation Army Red Kettle Volunteer Coordinator.
I am tasked with finding volunteer bell ringers for 10 locations within the City of LaPorte. Our Kettle Drive Kickoff will take place on Sunday November 2 at the La Porte High School Auditorium with a benefit concert by Cripple Creek. Tickets are $5.00 and may be purchased at the Salvation Army, the Door Village United Methodist Church, and the LaPorte Radio station or at the door on the day of the concert.
We will begin ringing bells on November 7th and will continue until December 24th. Our hours of operation are Monday – Saturday from 8am until 8pm. This will require a total of 360 volunteers every week for almost 8 weeks. We schedule most of our volunteers for at least a 2 hour shift and encourage them to volunteer with a friend, their family or with a group. We also love to have our volunteers sing, play a guitar or drums, anything to help put the people of LaPorte into the Holiday Spirit.
The Salvation Army is very active in our community.
We have a soup kitchen which serves dinner 4 nights a week and currently feeds approximately 700 people per month
Our food pantry serves on an average of 400 families/or 1200 people per month
We have a daily food distribution of bread, baked goods, fresh produce, pizza and chicken
We are in our third year of our “Backpack Food for Kids” program which supplies 6 weekend meals for 310 of our elementary school children. We will distribute over 70,000 meals by the end of the current school year
Last year we supplied 736 food boxes at Christmas which included a turkey, ham or meat voucher. The year we expect to supply anywhere from 800-900 food boxes to the community over the Holiday season
We distributed over 6000 toys, hat, coats, gloves and boots to individual in need last season
We also supplied Christmas gifts to 250 plus people in nursing homes in our community.
These are just a few of the programs which we sponsor not only during the holidays but throughout the entire year. Please consider giving of your time and talents during this coming Christmas season. The people of LaPorte, who struggle to not only make ends meet but to survive, need your help. Gather your friends and family to give back to the community that has given so much to us through the years.
If you, your family, or an organization that you belong to would like to volunteer to help "ring the bells" please contact me as soon as possible. It is all of our responsibility to help care for and to give back to our community. If you can commit to a mere 2 hours during the months of November or December, I would be extremely grateful as will the community that we call home. You can reach me through the Salvation Army (219-326-5342) or by e-mail ([email protected])
